We’re slowly approaching SummerSlam and the build towards the World title match between Liv Morgan and Iyo Sky continues. This week, Sky faces Judgement Day member Roxanne Perez in a match that could give momentum to both sides. Who will emerge on top? And what will happen when Bayley calls out Lyra Valkyria to meet face-to-face? Let’s get into it, and find out…
This week’s ‘Arrived Earlier Today’ videos featured IYO SKY and MAXXINE DUPRI with her new official boys of The Vision.
Singles Match
IYO SKY defeated ROXANNE PEREZ w/h LIV MORGAN & RAQUEL RODRIGUEZ
Perez reminded us all of the injury angle of the storyline, taunting Sky about the bad knee. The opening lock-up allowed Perez to force Sky into a corner, using the hair to rough up Sky. Sky would tackle Perez down, hitting mount punches then a handstand into a Double Knee Drop for barely a two count. Perez escaped a Bodyslam and hit a slap, leading to an exhance of hair pulls and bad mouthing. Sky would do her combo of misdirection, flip evasions, a leg trip and went for a Dropkick, but Perez countered into a Jackknife pin. Leading to an exchange of near falls and moments later Sky used misdirection to hit a Dropkick.
Sky went for a dive but Perez caught her at the ropes with a Forearm. The two battled on the apron and Sky got the better of it with a form of a Bodyslam to drive Perez onto the apron. Setting things up for Sky’s Asai Moonsault to Perez on the floor. Perez was sent back in and distracted the ref, allowing Rodriguez to then get Sky’s attention so Morgan could grab the leg. That gave Perez the time to get up and trip up Sky, leaving her on the apron before she delivered a stomp to Sky’s leg over the ropes, targeting the ‘injured knee’ that has been part of the story since the Clash of Champions match.
The show went to a ‘commercial break’ as Perez drove the bad leg into the ring steps and stomped the leg on the floor. Sky now sold the leg like death in the ring as Perez hit strikes to Sky against the ropes, leading to a Running European Uppercut followed by the Tilt-a-Whirl Side Russian Legsweep. Perez applied a rest hold of a Toe Hold. Moments later, Sky went for the Wheelbarrow Double Stomp spot, but Perez rolled away and stomping the mat, Sky sold the bad leg being in pain before Perez hit a Chop Block. The Satomura Special got Perez a near fall before the show went back to ‘live action’.
Perez went for a Super Back Suplex but Sky fought free, but going for the Moonsault Perez swept the leg to leave Sky hung up, allowing Perez to stomp away at the bad knee then hitting a European Uppercut. Perez went for the Double Springboard Lionsault but Sky brought the knees up. Sky went House on Fire with a Shotei, a Flapjack, the Wheelbarrow Double Stomp then a Double Underhook Backbreaker for a nearfall. Moments later, Sky hit a Missile Dropkick, kipped up and DID THE THING before going for the Bullet Train Attack but she only hit the corner when Perez moved.
Perez used a Lucha-style Arm Drag to take down Sky, rolling into a version of a Calf Killer submission but Sky would roll through, locking on a Crossface. Perez escaped but was hit with a Knee Strike. Sky went for the Moonsault and had to kick Morgan down when she tried to get involved before hopping down to hit a Lucha Kick to Rodriguez. Perez tried to pounce with a European Clutch but Sky countered it at the two count with a sit-down pin of her own to get the victory.
After the match Morgan went to attack Sky but she ducked, hitting a Shotei then a Buzzsaw Kick. Perez hit a Chop Block to take down Sky before Rodriguez stomped away. SOL RUCA ran to the ring, taking out Perez with a Pump Knee then Rodriguez with a Handstand into a Headscissors, setting up a Superkick. Ruca went for a Headscissors off the apron, but Rodriguez’s power blocked it, allowing her to swing Ruca into the barricade and then a Powerbomb grip to drive Ruca into the ring post. In the ring, Sky had been distracted by this and it allowed Morgan to hit ObLIVion. Roughing up Sky with shots into the canvas before The Judgement Day held up Sky, allowing Morgan to level Sky with a shot from the World Championship to leave her laid out.
The Vision, with new member Maxxine Dupri, went to the ring for a promo with Dupri all over Austin Theory to show their on-screen relationship. Dupri was referred to as The Vision Queen, Maxxine. Before Dupri could talk, her old team of Otis and Akira Tozawa walked out to the ring, wanting to talk to Dupri. Dupri convinced The Vision to leave the ring as Tozawa claimed this wasn’t her. The fans booed Dupri out of the building as she claimed Alpha Academy were the ones who gave her a choice to either be with Theory or with them, playing the victim. Otis cut her off, calling Theory bad news and Dupri took major exception to that. When it appeared that Otis might be confession feelings to Dupri, Theory interjected to mock him as Dupri acted like she was torn.
When Theory levelled insults, Otis attacked to kick off a brawl between the Academy and The Vision. Dupri made it clear which side she was on as she used Otis’ feelings against her, protecting Theory from being struck and faking that she was going to embrace him and give a kiss, but it was a set-up so Theory could hit a low blow. Handing Theory a set of brass knuckles (that she got from Logan Paul) so he could hit a loaded punch and watching on as the Academy were laid out. Standing over Otis with boots on his chest before leaving the ring to end the segment.
Later in the show as The Vision returned to the locker room as Paul Heyman raved about their actions, but seemingly still turned down aligning with the group, implying that with Dupri being so good that they didn’t need him anymore.
BAYLEY was interviewed by Byron Saxton and she looked far from happy. Bayley however took the mic from him and went to ring to make good on her promise from last week to call out her former friend. LYRA VALKYRIA would answer the call, showing off her unhinged look with torn clothing and her hair hanging down. Valkyria took exception to Bayley demanding an apology, claiming she’d been held down for a year by her and played the victim, saying Bayley was the problem. Valkyria said she’d lied the entire time, calling Bayley a doormat and not a leader, and called her the worst of the Four Horsewomen. Bayley countered by saying Valkyria wasn’t anything special and listed her accolades, adding that she’d add beating her up at Saturday Night’s Main Event to the collection, having talked to Adam Pearce before coming out to get the match official even before talking.
Valkyria tried for a cheap shot, but Bayley was ready for it. Taking down Valkyria and hitting shots, but Valkyria kicked Bayley away and then hit a Clothesline before stomping the head. Valkyria then hit a statement of a Bayley-to-Belly before posing and showing off unhinged looks as she stood over the hurting Bayley to end the segment. The match between the two at SNME was made official later in the show with a match graphic.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
A great match as only to be expected from one of the very best in Sky, and Perez who continues to shine even being held back as the lowest ranked in The Judgement Day. The beatdown involving Sol Ruca makes me think they’ll run back another Ruca and Rodriguez IC title match, or at the very least have a tag match with Sky and Ruca against The Judgment Day sometime soon. It all worked out nicely to hype the SummerSlam match. The Valkyria and Bayley segment did it’s job fine to rush into the SNME announced match. You can argue that the past few weeks of videos are build as well, but there’s nothing like a proper, seen segment to do the actual job. It worked. Lastly, Dupri managed to shine again with great acting skills and her being the lead of The Vision is a major push. We’ll see if it works out and leads to any title oppertunities or if she’ll just be a manager again.
