As of today, ROH Women’s World Champion Athena stands as the second longest reigning champion in the nearly two year history of the title, and is tied with Rok-C as the most successful of those champions, both having successfully defended on nine occasions. To eclipse Mercedes Martinez’s reign, Athena needs to hold onto that title for another 54 days, but in order to become the champion with the most defense, she needs to just put up one more.
The problem seems to be though that no one can defeat “The Fallen Goddess” in a Proving Ground Match to actually earn a championship bout, but that doesn’t mean people will stop trying. This Thursday night Promise Braxton will be the one getting the nod, and though they not be from the same generation, both women trained under the learning tree of Booker T. Braxton is no stranger to the ROH Women’s World Championship, having challenged Rok-C back in October of 2021, and though she failed to claim the title, Promise did take the defending champion to her limits for thirteen minutes, three minutes longer, it should be noted, than she has to survive in order to earn a shot against Athena.
Promise Braxton just has to last ten minutes with Athena in order to earn her championship bout, it’s either that or actually defeat “The Fallen Goddess” on Thursday night; which one will it be?
