Hey and welcome back to the Revelleution and some rather awesome news as earlier this evening WWE and 2K dropped the very first trailer for the now officially confirmed WWE 2K22.
I have to say right off the bat I’m really excited to start the road for WWE 2K22 and I honestly can’t wait to pick up a new WWE 2K Simulation game because it’s been far too long without it in my life and I need sim content on the double!.
Whilst Battlegrounds was a fun quick easy to pick up and play game, it’s no secret that even with the constant flow of DLC the game still felt somewhat baron and quite frankly it didn’t reach its full potential. But that’s enough on Battlegrounds let’s focus on the future. I will say one of my absolute favourite things about this whole thing is that WWE and 2K have partnered up to present this trailer over WrestleMania weekend of all things and I really hope it’s a new tradition we see year after year.
I’m going to be completely and totally honest with you here; I’m really conflicted when it comes to the trailer. A huge part of me is really excited for what this all means but at the same time I have to be frank with you, I don’t feel like the trailer did exactly what it needed to do right out of the gate and I don’t exactly know what they were trying to portray outside of the fact there is a new game coming?. Don’t get me wrong that’s something really cool and long overdue but I’m craving that hype factor.
I will say it could be down to the fact we haven’t had a new sim game in quite some time and most of us are expecting some big jump from 20 to 22 so maybe we should have lowered our first expectations for the very first trailer? I also don’t think it helps that WWE 2K20 had an awesome reveal trailer that actually gave you a hint of where things were going all while providing some light entertainment with Becky Lynch, whereas there doesn’t seem to be any sort of direction for the content within the trailer bar the fact that a new title is coming.
Does this mean Rey Mysterio is possibly the cover star for WWE 2K22? Am I reading too much into things? Quite possibly but I don’t understand promoting Rey Mysterio the entire trailer if there is no reasoning behind it? Speaking of Rey it looks like Rey’s attire is from his United States Championship win from back in November 2019 where he won the title from then rival AJ Styles. There Is no denying that Rey’s character model looks great and it certainly excites me to see how the rest of the roster looks in the coming weeks and months, especially when it comes to the women.
It also looks as though the Thunderdome for Monday Night RAW will indeed be part of the game with SmackDown’s alternate version likely to follow suit with a simple recolour and rebrand for the blue brand. One glaring factor I can’t help but mention however is that instead of the virtual live audience screens, WWE and 2K have seemingly opted to switch things up by adding a live crowd to the arena which doesn’t exactly represent the product you see on TV right now. This could possibly be some sort of optional feature within the game but I would hazard a guess and say that’s highly unlikely at least for the time being. It might not seem like an important detail to the average WWE gamer but for those of us who are hardcore WWE gamers who live and breathe the games It does come across a little jarring. It also makes me question whether or not the pre pandemic RAW and SmackDown arenas will be a part of the game especially with how popular they became before all this madness kicked off.
We also got confirmation of the official tagline for WWE 2K22 which is ‘It hits different’. What this means right now exactly I don’t quite know and it could easily mean a few different things. It could be that this is 2K’s way of saying they intend to deliver something different this time around with 2k22, especially after the backlash of 2k20.
Being the nerd I am I decided to research the phrase ‘it hits different’ with most articles referring to the phrase as being something which affects you in a meaningful way, It may be a new experience that stands out or something you’ve experienced before but now affects you differently. This got me thinking about possible theming for the likes of this year’s showcase and what it could mean for the game. Obviously take this with a teeny weeny tiny grain of salt as this is nothing but mere speculation but what if this year’s showcase for instance is a series of nostalgic matches that many of us look back on with awe recreated in the WWE 2K engine. Not only would this solve the issue of recreating the entire career of certain superstars especially when most of their infamous opponents have gone on to join other companies but it also opens up the pool for Superstars and legends to take part in the game for one off matches. I highly doubt this is the case but I certainly wouldn’t be opposed to the notion especially if it means more superstars.
Before we go too far down the rabbit hole I think it’s time to wind it down but please let me know in the comments down below what you make of today’s trailer. Whilst it may come off like I seem somewhat negative about the trailer at times I want to clarify that I did enjoy the trailer and I’m super excited for what comes next, it just didn’t get me hyped like previous trailers have in the past.I’m really excited to get on board the WWE 2K22 train and I hope you at home will hop on board too. I hope you all have an awesome WrestleMania weekend and if you want to keep eating all this weekend’s activities up be sure to stay tuned to the Revelleution.
Until next time I’ve been the Revelleution hoping you all stay safe, sane and filled to the brim with WrestleMania fun.
